Cosmetic surgery 'requires trained practitioner'

Cosmetic surgery treatments should be conducted by trained professionals, one expert has remarked.

Fazel Fatah, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, told the BBC that the lines between cosmetic surgery and cosmetic salon treatments are being blurred.

"There is a difference between plastic surgery - facelifts, breast enhancement, tummy tucks, liposuction, etc - and cosmetic salon treatments such as lasers, peels and injectable fillers," he remarked.

With the growing interest in both, Mr Fatah condemned the practice of "cross-selling" serious medical procedures with non-invasive beauty treatments.

This is due to the fact that there can be any number of complex reasons behind someone looking to have cosmetic surgery, while cosmetic treatments are most often conducted for vanity, the doctor remarked.

However, he added that when cosmetic surgery is done for the right reasons, "the reward is a significant enhancement of the wellbeing and the quality of life for the patient".
