Side effects of statins questioned

drugs

Recent research has found that statins could have unintended effects on some patients.

Published in the British Medical Journal, the study suggested that some members of the population could be at risk.

Potential adverse effects were "confirmed and quantified" by the study.

However, June Davison, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, suggested that the benefits were worth the risk.

"We already know that a small number of people taking statins experience unwanted side effects," she said.

"However for people with, or at high risk of heart disease, the benefits of statins far outweigh this risk."

Ms Davison added that good news from the study is that no significant link was found between the use of statins and the risk of Parkinson's disease or many cancers and she called for anyone with concerns to contact their doctor.

Statins are prescribed to protect health, high-risk people from developing heart disease.
