People suffering from sleep disorders could find that their physical wellbeing improves through treatment.
According to the Sleep Council, poor sleep and sleep deprivation can affect people physically as well as mentally.
Spokesperson Jessica Alexander explained: "It's certainly been linked with problems such as diabetes, heart disease and digestive problems."
Her comments follow the publication of a new study by UK and Italian researchers, which found a link between lack of sleep and premature death.
Published in the journal Sleep, it revealed that people who sleep for less than six hours a night are 12 per cent more likely to die prematurely.
Ms Alexander said that the results of the study are not surprising.
"Sleep is important and we need to give it more priority," she insisted, pointing out that in today's modern society people are trying to cram more and more into a 24-hour day, with many sacrificing a few hours of sleep as a result.
It is therefore essential that the sleep people do get is good quality restful sleep in a cool, quiet, dark environment with a comfortable bed.
