Older professionls 'drinking to excess'

too much to drink
Medical experts have warned that growing numbers of middle-aged professionals are putting their health at risk by drinking to excess on a regular basis.

The latest figures released by the NHS Information Centre show that some ten million Britons are now consuming more alcohol than is good for them on a weekly basis.

This appears to be more common in middle-class households, with 64 per cent of managerial-level professionals admitting to having been drunk in the preceding week compared with 54 per cent of those in working-class homes.

In addition, the study found that one in seven professionals drink on a daily basis, with married people also more likely to drink to excess than singletons.

"The majority of those who regularly exceed the recommended limits are more likely to work in office jobs, and range in ages from their mid-twenties to early sixties," commented Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians.

Drinking too much and too often is known to affect the liver and heart as well as overall health.
