Money worries force ill people back to work

Aviva

A Lightspeed Research study of businesses and their employees suggests that the majority of employees are prepared to jeopardise their long term health by returning to work from sickness before they are well. Under one in four say they would never be prepared to sacrifice their health in order to get back to work quickly.

The research report for Aviva pinpoints money worries as the root cause for this damaging trend. Half say they would come back to work early if they thought their family could not cope financially while one in ten sadly claimed that fear of losing their job would hasten their return to work.

The survey suggests that eight out of ten employees feel they cannot get by on less than half salary. 40% of employers offer this level of financial support to those on long term sick leave. By taking out income protection insurance that pays a regular tax-free income should you be unable to work due to illness or accidental injury – you can easily be spared from many of the hardships of long term absence.

Kevin Murdoch at Aviva comments: "Long term sickness can have a major impact on an individual and their family. The disturbing findings in our survey highlight just how poorly equipped to survive a period of long term absence many are. Returning to work prematurely from an illness or injury can be detrimental to your health. Health is the most precious gift and we abuse it at our peril.”
