Eating grapes could cut down on the chances of developing diabetes, it has been claimed.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan found that grapes contain naturally occurring antioxidants which could reduce the risk factors related to cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.
Known as phytochemicals, the antioxidants are thought to be particularly effective against type 2 diabetes, which is closely liked to obesity.
Dr Linda Voss, co-ordinator of the EarlyBird Diabetes Study, claimed that lifestyle changes were more important.
"The best way to prevent obesity and diabetes is to take on board fewer calories and exercise more," she advised.
"A healthy balanced diet is going to be naturally rich in these antioxidants and phytochemicals," she added, warning that: "Excess weight gain is strongly linked to diabetes. If you eat too much and you put on too much weight, you are hugely increasing your risk of getting diabetes."
