Sticking to 'diet foods' can be an effective means of fighting obesity, it has been claimed.
Dr Susan Jebb, nutrition scientist with UK Medical Research Council (MRC), explained that most people know what they need to do to shed the pounds and get healthy, and as such, it's simply a matter of self-discipline.
She added: "It's a practical issue, people just find it hard to do the right thing all of the time."
Commenting on the benefits of healthier options, she said: "The whole concept of structure and choice and variety seem to be very important in helping people to control their weight ... [though] these can only work in so far as they help people and offer practical support to people to eat fewer calories."
Recent research carried out by the website mySupermarket.co.uk found that sales of slimming ranges have risen by around 32 per cent over the past two years alone.
