1 in 10 Britons turn up at work with hangovers

Alcohol
As many as half a million Britons arrive at work with a hangover each day, new research into the nation's drinking habits has revealed.

While nine in ten of those polled for the new Bupa study stated that being hungover at work is "unacceptable", a significant proportion continue to drink during the week even though they know they will be less productive the next day.

A fifth of those who admitted hat they go to work with a hangover at least once a week conceded that their condition has an adverse affect on their professional performance, with seven per cent admitting to having gone home early as a result of feeling unwell.

Bupa Health and Wellbeing medical director Dr Katrina Herren said employers should address the issue head-on.

"As an employer, it is important not to ignore the effects of alcohol on employees or the adverse effects it can have on the workplace environment," she added.

The Institute of Alcohol Studies recently condemned UK supermarkets for continuing to promote alcohol in an "irresponsible manner".
