Research is needed in order to provide a drug for ADHD sufferers which does not cause any side affects.
This is the view of Jacqui Vango, co-founder of ADHD charity Misunderstood.
Ms Vango was commenting on an article published in the Guardian under the Freedom of Information legislation which revealed that there has been a 65 per cent increase in spending on drugs to treat ADHD over the past four years.
"I think money should go into research to find a drug that is suitable and doesn't cause side effects for sufferers of ADHD," added the expert.
She explained that "no amount of counselling and strict discipline is going to stop a child" with ADHD because they are suffering from a chemical imbalance in the brain which requires medication.
Commonly known as ADHD, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects parts of the brain which control attention, impulses and concentration and is a genetically determined condition.
