APS issues lower back pain management guidelines

back pain

The American Pain Society (APS) has published new advice on the treatment of lower back pain management.

It spells out eight essential points that it recommends clinicians employ in the treatment of lower back pain, advocating a greater involvement of patients in the decision-making process.

The information was published in the journal Spine that charts developments in medical procedures and treatment of spinal injury and other back problems.

Dr Roger Chou is lead author of the study and director of the APS Clinical Practice Guideline Program and associate professor of medicine (general internal medicine) at the Oregon Evidence-based Practice Center, Oregon Health & Science University.

He commented: "Unfortunately, randomised trials for a number of commonly used interventional procedures are still too limited to generate evidence-based recommendations and our review also highlights the need for more research."

APS was established in 1978 to promote awareness of acute and chronic pain among clinicians, providers of health insurance and policy makers.
