Liver treatment advance reveals effect of reperfusion

the liver in the human body

Advancement in liver treatment is a step closer with recent research into reperfusion of previously ischemic tissue.

Scientists at the University of Tehran conducted a study that reveals the mechanics of an injury induced during reperfusion.

This has been identified as biphasic pattern, which comprises an early stage that begins with reoxygenation and a "delayed phase".

Reperfusion starts a process that brings about hepatocellular injury and cell death, an event that was analysed by the scientists in rat liver.

A team led by Dr Hossein Ali Arab examined the effect of alternating periods of lobar ischemia and the changes they brought about in the rat liver.

Further investigation that was conductedshowed that the biochemical make-up of the liver of the rat had altered significantly after exposure to hepatic ischemia-reperfusion.

Ischemia is caused by loss of blood supply to a tissue while reperfusion occurs with the subsequent return of that blood supply.
