Suntans may be going out of fashion

skin cancer prevention

A suntanned appearance may be going out of fashion, according to a new survey of British teenagers.

The trend will be welcomed by cancer experts, as the number of people needing skin cancer treatment has risen dramatically in recent years.

Researchers at the Teenage Cancer Trust surveyed 1,000 teenagers and found that 65 per cent thought a suntan looked 'chavvy'.

Lucy Jackson, director of communications at the Teenage Cancer Trust, said that she was "very surprised" by the findings.

"We hope that this means that they will start to be more careful in the sun. The fact that tans are beginning to be deemed unfashionable is great for skin cancer prevention."

However, Ms Jackson noted that the survey had also revealed a lack of awareness about skincare.

Nearly a quarter of respondents wrongly thought that wearing tanning oil or going in the swimming pool would protect them from the sun, and 42 per cent were reluctant to cover up in the sun because they thought it might ruin their image.
