Obesity treatment demand to continue as problem remains

Pre-obesity-surgical weight loss linked to shorter hospital stay
People who are considering undergoing obesity surgery in order to lose weight should be aware that there is more than one type of procedure available, and they may not all be suitable for everyone.

According to Dr Nick Nicholson, medical director of weight loss surgery at the Baylor Regional Medical Centre in Plano, US, patients should be told up-front about the different options for obesity surgery and advised about the necessary postoperative exercise and diet regimes.

Clinics typically offer gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding and gastric sleeve procedures, and Dr Nicholson advises patients to take the time to consider at least two of these options.

He explained: "One procedure may be more effective for you than another, so explore all options."

The expert also noted that patients must make lifestyle changes in order for obesity surgery to be successful, claiming that around 90 per cent of their long-term success lies in their own hands.
