The government is putting the public at severe risk by proposing to deregulate lasers and
intense pulse light (IPL) technologies.
That is the opinion of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, which was established to advance the practice of cosmetic dermatology in the UK.
Members have signed a petition urging prime minister Gordon Brown to reject the Department of Health's proposals, claiming that by proceeding with deregulation he would be 'letting the public burn'.
Dr Paul Myers, member of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, said that the association is urging all of its members to lobby the government.
"Although lasers and IPL can be safe if administered in an appropriate clinical environment by a trained clinician, the public must be aware that these procedures do pose some risks of burning and scarring when in the wrong hands.
"So by allowing deregulation to take place, Mr Brown does not think it is worth protecting the public."
