Revolutionary MRI scanner used in Oxford

The world's first 360 degree MRI scanner has been installed and put into operation at a hospital in Oxford.

The scanner has a unique construction, being open-sided instead of based on the familiar tunnel shape.

Not only does this provide more access for patients but it also permits surgeons to operate while a patient is still inside.

The new scanner is just one of the services available in a newly completed £42 million centre at Oxford's Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC).

Simon Ostlere, consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the hospital, explained: "The unique imaging capability of the FONAR 360 is a very attractive option for claustrophobic patients.

"It is also very quiet in comparison with conventional tunnel MRI scanners, so it's much less intimidating for children, who can see their parents and be reassured throughout the scanning process."

The scanner will be available to NHS patients from Oxfordshire and from elsewhere in the UK on referral to the NOC.

Mr Ostlere added: "We're keen to promote this service, so that patients throughout the UK can take advantage of this facility."
