It can be a challenge to get out and about with your newborn baby in
the middle of winter but the benefits of baby massage make it all worthwhile.
Four little babies and their mums and dads came along for baby massage
training with Teresa Walsh The Portland Hospital's midwife and childbirth educator and qualified
infant massage trainer.
The youngest baby was only 3 weeks old when the classes commenced and
the others were around 12 -16 weeks old.
Each baby behaved differently in the sessions and as the course
developed mums and dads gradually learned to respond to baby’s cues which
allowed for more massage time.
Interestingly, one baby boy preferred to watch the other babies being
massaged during the session and his mother said how he loved the massage
strokes when she did them at home in his own nursery.
The joys of baby massage are endless:
- Learning where your baby is happy to be massaged with a loving
touch
- Relaxes both the parent
and baby and improves their sleep pattern
- Enhances the bonding
between parent and baby
- Potentially relives
symptoms of colic for baby
- Offers support and social
setting for new parents
Congratulations to Peyton, Emelia, Zach and Leon who are all happy
recipients of infant massage and experiencing the nurturing touch.
Baby massage classes are held every Friday afternoon from 3pm until
4.30pm. The baby massage 4-week course can be booked by contacting the Maternity
