It is best to lose weight through a number of small changes over a long period of time.
This is the view of Steve Halsall, entrepreneur and celebrity fitness trainer.
Mr Halsall said: "For example, giving yourself a couple of weeks to get yourself and your kitchen organised so you can eat more healthily.
"Or give yourself a goal of two weeks just to start getting breakfast sorted out as the most important meal of the day; for example, making sure it's a healthier choice."
The comments follow the publication of the latest overweight figures from the NHS, which revealed that obesity-related hospital admissions increased by more than 30 per cent over the past year.
However, Mr Halsall noted that with some determination and the ability to be consistent, people can reduce their weight.
While nothing will happen overnight, he explained, in the long-term you can make sufficient changes to give reduce your weight in a sustainable fashion.
