'Thousands' undiagnosed with dementia

Thousands of people are living with dementia undiagnosed, it has been suggested.

The Alzheimer's Society noted that by 2021 there could be as many as half a million people living in the UK with the illness but without knowing about it.

Indeed, the charity has mapped the state of dementia and diagnosis levels in the country for the first time, with current diagnosis levels at around 40 per cent.

Milton Keynes was found to be the area forecast to have the largest gap between the number of people predicted to be living with dementia and the number who had received a diagnosis.

Fiona Phillips, Alzheimer's Society ambassador and journalist, commented: "It's shocking that so many people are struggling to cope with this devastating illness all on their own.

"If we don't raise awareness of dementia, in ten years time, half a million people will be unable to give their symptoms a name and have no access to the help they so desperately need and deserve."
