'More should be done' to tackle alcohol abuse

too much to drink

One medical advocacy organisation has called for more to be done to discourage people from consuming too much alcohol.

Tom Roberts, project director at Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems, said that the current plan to ban the sale of alcohol below the cost of duty plus VAT will impact on "very few products".

Charity Alcohol Concern has also noted that the government's method of dealing with cheap alcohol sales will do "almost nothing" when it comes to the worst offenders.

Indeed, of the 600 alcohol products surveyed in the north-east, north-west and Scotland, just two were shown to have an increased price.

Mr Robert added: "We support the introduction of a minimum unit price which would be far more effective in raising the prices of the cheapest drinks.

"The government must look to policies that will increase the price of alcohol to levels that will reduce consumption."
