Could private maternity service help ensure baby's survival?

diet during her pregnancy can impact health of child

Mums-to-be might want to research private maternity services to make sure that they have access to some of the best levels of care available.

Judy Ledger, chief executive of Baby Lifeline, has highlighted the "traumatic and tragic experience" that is losing a child, irrespective of the gestational age at which this loss occurs.

Hence, she explained, "there is an argument to do everything possible to ensure survival of babies even at 23 weeks of gestation because advances in obstetric and neonatal care have already enabled the threshold of viability to be reduced from 28 weeks to 24 weeks".

Ms Ledger added that it is "only logical" to continue to work hard to improve the survival of all babies, even those in extreme preterm births.

The comments follow a study published by Tommy's, which found that in a study of babies born before 26 weeks of gestation in the UK and Ireland in 1995, only half of those born at 22 weeks survived compared to 81 per cent of those born at 24 weeks.
