A good care home promotes independence, dignity and choice, according to the head of services design for residential care services at Care UK.
Karen Morrison also noted that a care home should encourage its residents to "live the lives they want" by providing flexible care that is tailored around the person and provided that staff that are "skilled and committed".
Stimulating and creative environments will also deliver a more pleasurable atmosphere.
The comments come after Care UK confirmed that it is "re-writing the rule book" on how to create a dementia-friendly care home environment.
Its homes are now intended to include fireplaces in lounges in order to more closely reflect a family home.
The internationally recognised symbols for a toilet or bathroom are also to be scrapped and replaced with a photograph of what is behind the door.
Finally, Care UK intends of creating smaller dining rooms that are entirely separate from the lounge area of the home so that residents have a sense that it is time for a meal.
