Guildford clinician recognised by peers as one of the best fibroid doctors in the UK

Consultant Interventional Radiologist Dr Woodruff Walker
Consultant Interventional Radiologist Dr Woodruff Walker, who practices at BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford, has been named by peers as being in the UK’s top 10 fibroid doctors in a survey conducted by the Daily Mail.

The survey, which canvassed 40 leading gynaecologists and interventional radiologists, asked just one question: ‘If your own nearest and dearest were to need fibroid treatment to whom would you refer them and why?’ In the Daily Mail article that announced the survey, fellow surgeons said the following of Dr Walker: “He is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of uterine artery embolisation and has blazed a trail in this country. An acknowledged expert who has done more fibroid embolisation than anyone else, he has achieved outstanding results. Extremely personable, and patients have complete and well-deserved faith in what he does. He won’t push anyone into anything.”

Fibroids are the most common form of non-cancerous tumors in females and are found in the muscles of the uterus. Dr Walker was flattered by the accolade, and also explained the importance of this treatment. “Many of our patients are significantly debilitated by the condition with heavy periods, anaemia and swelling of the abdomen. Some have also been through the heartache of infertility and miscarriage as a result of fibroids, and our job is to do as much as we can as clinicians (interventional radiologists or gynaecologists) to help. In doing so, we always strive to deliver the care that we would want members of our own family to receive,” said Dr Walker. “I am pleased, not only by this recognition, but also that this will help spread knowledge of this alternative to hysterectomy to the public.”

Executive Director of BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital, Eileen Scrase added: “We are extremely proud that Dr Walker has received this distinction - it’s a great honour and very much deserved. Fibroid embolisation is a highly-skilled specialty and he is an excellent interventionalist who is respected by colleagues, staff and patients alike.”

Dr Walker qualified as a doctor at the Middlesex Hospital in 1970, trained in Radiology at the Groote-Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and carried out his first embolisation for gastro-intestinal haemorrhage in 1976. Since that time he has published numerous articles and chapters on Interventional Radiology and Interventional and Diagnostic Gynaecology. He has personally carried out more than 2,000 fibroid embolisations.  Information on fibroid embolisation can be found on the website www.fibroids.co.uk.
