Weight loss surgery 'best treatment for morbid obesity'

Gravitas

A group of surgeons has claimed that weight loss surgery is the best way to tackle morbid obesity.

Mike Parker, chief executive of Gravitas, has called for GPs to ask any questions they may have about obesity treatment in order to offer the best service to patients.

Mr Parker said: "Morbid obesity has developed rapidly into a worldwide problem. Yet despite the fact that bariatric surgery is acknowledged as the best form of treatment, we recognise that many GPs still have a great deal of unanswered questions and concerns about obesity surgery in general."

However, yesterday saw Shami Thomas, spokeswoman for Transform, argue that cosmetic surgery treatments, such as liposuction, can only help a patient lose weight when coupled with diet and exercise.

It could be the case that Mr Parker is referring to more extreme forms of surgery, including gastric bypasses.

His comments come as Gravitas have published an advice booklet for GPs which explains what different weight loss treatments can achieve.
