Air pollution 'probably more fatal than obesity'

industrial pollution
Research has revealed that air pollution is having a serious effect on the health of people in Britain.

A report conducted by the environmental audit committee argued that air pollution was contributing to thousands of premature deaths every year.

According to the chair of the committee Tim Yeo, in the worst affected areas, vulnerable people could be having their lives shortened by as much as nine years.

Mr Yeo added: "Air pollution probably causes more deaths than passive smoking, traffic accidents or obesity, yet it receives very little attention from government or the media."

Emissions from road vehicles were revealed to be the most damaging to people's health.

However, the committee noted that measures being taken to cut down emissions in order to reduce climate change would also reduce the negative effect of pollution on health.

The report found that as many as 50,000 people could be dying early due to air pollution from traffic and industry.
