The Intensive Care Units at Wellington Hospital in North London have been ranked some of the top units in the country in a new report from the independent Intensive Care National Audit Research Centre (ICNARC).

The Wellington North ICU, and Wellington South ICU have been ranked first and second out of 181 NHS and private ICUs across the country using Standardised Mortality Rates using the ICNARC model.

The Wellington North ICU, which underwent expansion and remodelling under two years ago, is once again being expanded to cater for the growing demand for ICU beds.

Lead Consultant Intensivist at The Wellington, Dr Adrian Steele, said the rankings were a considerable achievement. “Even after taking account of differences in the case mix between The Wellington and many other units in the database, this is a great achievement,” he said. “The Wellington takes in some very sick people and this high a ranking represents the results of a very considerable investment in facilities, in recruiting excellent staff, in staff training and having an emphasis on high standards of clinical governance, infection control and regular auditing.”

Hospital Chief Executive Keith Hague said the rankings reflected the hospital’s international reputation for the highest standards of tertiary medicine and its ability to accept very ill patients and at very short notice. “Some of our patients have undergone complex brain surgery, liver or cardiac surgery at The Wellington and some come in from abroad and some from other private hospitals that do not have our specialist care facilities,” he said.

“We can provide the highest levels of organ support for medical and surgical patients and the ICUs can provide haemofiltration and advanced respiratory support. There is literally nothing we cannot cope with at The Wellington,” said Mr Hague.

When the current expansion is completed, The Wellington will have 20 ICU (level 3) beds including several isolation units, and 38 HDU (level 2) beds.
