Bupa Cromwell Hospital pioneers brain surgery tool in UK

Bupa Cromwell Hospital

Surgeons at Bupa Cromwell Hospital have recently undertaken the first treatment in the UK using an advanced new system for non-invasive brain surgery.

The Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion allows delicate brain surgery to be carried out in a shorter space of time and with minimal discomfort to the patient.

Its first UK outing involved a middle-aged athletic woman who was treated for multiple brain tumours following a primary breast cancer, Bupa Cromwell Hospital has revealed.

Previously, this procedure would have taken up to eight hours, but the new tool enabled it to be performed in just four hours, with the patient resuming her daily activities within 24 hours.

The new technology, which can also be used for treating the cervical spine, head and neck regions, "has the highest level of patient comfort on the market, has faster treatment time and treats lesions that previously could not be treated", the hospital said.

Bupa Cromwell Hospital, located in West London, claims to be the capital's premier independent private hospital.

Bupa Cromwell Hospital's Gamma Knife Centre is one of only a handful in the UK to provide patients with Gamma Knife surgery as an alternative to open brain surgery.

The procedure uses highly-precise radiation beams to destroy brain tumours and abnormalities without opening the skull, minimising the risk of harm to normal brain tissue, nerves and blood vessels, and removing the need for a general anaesthetic.
