A specialist Breast Clinic on London's prestigious Harley Street is to become the first in Europe to offer a new blood based screening test for breast cancer.
The London Breast Clinic is to provide the BCtect test which is complimentary to mammography in order to assist with the early detection of the disease.
BCTect is a blood test which can be particularly useful for women with dense breasts where the cancer may be harder to find on mammography alone. This is particularly relevant in the younger patient age group.
Dr James MacKay, genetic oncologist at The London Breast Clinic at 108 Harley Street, said: "I believe that this test is the most significant development in the detection of early breast cancer in the last decade worldwide."
He added: "Regular mammographic screening still misses cancers. To be able to offer such a test as BCTect alongside regular mammography is an exciting prospect for us. Increasing the pick up rate of early breast cancer in young women is especially important."
Cancer survival rates can improve dramatically when the disease is caught in the early stages, making developments like this essential.
