Type-2 diabetes 'can be reversed through an extreme low-calorie diet'

Type-2 diabetes - a condition common in those who need obesity treatment - can be reversed by the consumption of an extreme low-calorie diet alone.

That is according to a study by Newcastle University, funded by Diabetes UK, which found that seven out of 11 patients who consumed just 600 calories a day for two months were free of the disease after three months.

According to professor Roy Taylor, director of the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre and author of the report, the findings will change the way doctors explain the disease to newly-diagnosed patients.

"While it has long been believed that someone with Type-2 diabetes will always have the disease and that it will steadily get worse, we have shown that we can reverse the condition," he added.

Statistics from Diabetes U

K show that the type-2 strain of the condition accounts for between 85 and 90 per cent of cases and can be managed through a balanced diet and regular exercise.
