Retirees urged to keep active

In My Prime

Britons approaching retirement have been reminded of the importance of staying mentally active after leaving work, with strong social lives also key to preventing age-related decline.

Dianne Bown-Wilson, chief executive of advisory group In My Prime, suggested even simple tasks like playing sudoku or bridge on a regular basis can play an important role in sharpening mental reflexes.

"Facing the challenge of achieving something new through continuing education, taking up a new hobby or interest or putting oneself in a new environment through travelling, are all highly beneficial," she explained.

Ms Bown-Wilson added that keeping a positive mindset and making a concerted effort to get the most out of life are "key attributes" and said physical exercise had also been found to be particularly useful.

Last week, researchers from the University of Missouri advised those thinking about retiring to ensure they carry out thorough financial and personal planning to ensure a good standard of living.
