Those in need of obesity treatment will find that eating a healthy diet will increase their chances of lose weight more than counting calories, a new study has found.
The Harvard School of Public Health found that those who consume nuts, vegetables, whole grains and fruits will shed the pounds more quickly.
Researchers stated that cutting out sweet drinks, white bread and refined grains such as white rice will also also help weight loss.
In addition, the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, revealed that between six and eight hours of sleep per night will accelerate the process.
Dr Dariush Mozaffarian, co-author of the study, said that people need to look at their lifestyle choices and diet when working out a weight loss plan.
"Small dietary and other lifestyle changes can together make a big difference - for good or bad," he noted.
Nearly one in four adults in the UK is obese, according to statistics from the Department of Health.
