Research: CRT improves sexual health

CRT improves sexual health

Recent research has found that cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) can help improve men's sexual health.

Published in the journal Clinical Cardiology, the study revealed that men with chronic heart failure who undergo CRT have an improved libido, erectile dysfunction and sexual performance.

Chronic heart failure is characterized by fatigue and exercise intolerance, while a decreased libido and erectile dysfunction are also common.

However, using CRT as a pacemaker that paces the right and left ventricle can help to treat the condition.

The study was led by Ahmet Vural of Kocaeli University and looked at 31 male patients with advanced chronic heart failure.

Following the CRT treatment, 23 patients reported no erectile dysfunction and only two patients had the condition to a moderate extent, while in its severest form it was not identified in anybody.

Mr Vural concluded: "Not only does CRT decrease mortality in heart failure patients, it also brings improvement in sexual health to the patient's life."
