Britons 'are slower to seek medical attention than European neighbours'

doctor and patient
People in Britan are slower to seek medical advice - which could see them needing cancer treatment - than people in Europe, according to one expert.

Dr Mark Matfield, scientific co-ordinator at the Association for International Cancer Research, stated that mortality rates in the UK are higher and there are several pieces of research being conducted to ascertain why this is the case.

"One of the main suspects is the idea that, in the UK, we are slower to take things to our doctors. Maybe we have a tendency to ignore worrying symptoms at first, in the hope they will go away," Dr Matfield said.

He added that the sooner members of the public visit a medical professional, the quicker they can receive cancer treatment and boost their chances of living longer, stating that early diagnosis could save up to 10,000 more lives each year.

According to research in the British Medical Journal, conducted by Dr Laura Woods from the Cancer Research UK Cancer Survival Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, lower investment in healthcare is another factor that contributes to the UK having a higher mortality rate than other European nations.
