Breast implants 'are safe'

Cosmetic surgery - breast implant

Those considering breast surgery for silicon-filled implants can be sure of their safety and effectiveness, it has been claimed.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), while women will have to monitor their chest for local complications, the enhancements pose no major threat to their wellbeing.

While some may need to have them removed at some point in their lives, there is no link between connective tissue disease, breast cancer or reproductive problems, the body stated.

"The benefits and risks of breast implants are sufficiently well understood for women to make informed decisions about their use," the FDA stated.

Ladies considering having breast surgery are encouraged to arrange a routine follow-up with their doctor and have periodic MRI scans to ensure that everything remains in order.

According to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation procedures were up by 10.3 per cent last year compared to 2009.
