The link between obesity and type 2 diabetes has been brought up once again by a piece of research published in the Journal of the America Medical Association.
Looking at an older age group, the research confirmed the link between weight gain during middle age and an increased risk of diabetes in the over 65s.
Zoe Harrison, care advisor at health charity Diabetes UK, commented: "This research confirms what we already know – that being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes."
Ms Harrison added that "eating a healthy, balanced diet and doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day" should help people to lose weight in a steady manner.
However, she added that the exercise can be spread throughout the day and need not necessarily involve 30 minutes hard work in the gym.
Getting off the bus a few stops early or choosing to walk to the shops can all help to keep weight down.
