A few hundred ladies, and a few men, took part in the recent (Fri 11 June) annual Jospice Midnight Walk, sponsored by Medicash, raising an estimated £40,000 for the charity.

Fundraisers took to the streets of Crosby and followed an 11k route which started and finished at Holy Family High School in Thornton.

Jospice’s director of fundraising Pat Murphy said: “We are once again overwhelmed with the tremendous support from people and businesses across the region. We want to say a big thank you to all the walkers and their supporters for the fantastic amount of money they have raised.”

Liverpool based health cash plan provider Medicash has sponsored the fundraising event since it was launched five years ago. Medicash’s chief executive Sue Weir said; “Medicash is delighted to sponsor and support the Jospice Midnight Walk. The walk has been a massive success and raised essential funds which will allow St Joseph’s Hospice to continue to provide vital and specialist care and support to patients and their families.”

Amongst the female walkers were four men dressed as fairies. The four friends, members from Crosby’s Marine FC, raised over £2K in memory of their team-mate who passed away last year from a brain tumour. A patient at Jospice, he too did the walk two years ago dressed as a drag queen.

Based in Thornton, St Joseph’s Hospice was established in 1974 and has cared for over 5000 people and their families.

Other sponsors of the event included Holy Family High School, Sefton PCT, Merseytravel, Sainsbury’s, Lions, Merseyside Police and Hearts Health Club. BBC Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips officially launched the walk on the night.

In addition to sponsoring the event Medicash will also donate a percentage of the annual premium from any cash plans which are signed up to before 30 June 2010. Visit www.medicash.org or call 0800 011 2222 and quote “Midnight Walk”.
