Children 'need regular sleeping pattern'

A recent report from SRI International has revealed the effects that sleeping patterns can have on children.

According to the report, parents should help get their children into regular sleeping habits because in households with bedtime rules, children who get adequate sleep tend to score higher on a range of developmental assessments.

It was also revealed that having a regular bedtime was the most beneficial sleeping habit for parents to impose on their children.

Jessica Alexander from the Sleep Council agreed, noting that "a regular bedtime routine for everybody helps them [children] perform better".

She added that imposing a set time from an early age would increase the positive effects because children's brains need regular sleep during development.

Conversely, Ms Alexander added that children's attention tends to wander if they do not have enough sleep.

She warned that a consequence of this could be that they will not absorb as much information.
