Childhood obesity levels revealed

overweight kids

A recent study has revealed that one in three children in the UK are obese or overweight.

Conducted by Datamonitor, the report found that 34.7 per cent of UK children aged between five and 13 are currently suffering from the health problem.

However, this has been predicted to continue to rise by 2.1 per cent year on year to 2014.

According to the research group, this possible increase is linked to the fact that the UK has one of Europe's highest expenditures on confectionary and savoury snacks.

Lucy Jones, spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, suggested that educating children from a young age could help lower the obesity rate.

"Once somebody has grown up eating a large range of confectionary and very sweet food it is difficult to then get them back into what we would prefer as a three meal a day habit with healthy snacks in between," said Ms Jones.

She added: "What is ideal is that we get those messages in there within the first year of life."
