Check-up recommended for breast surgery patients

Women who have had cosmetic surgery on their breasts may want to have a check-up with their doctor.

A recent study from the French Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SOFCPRE) revealed problems with PIP breast implants.

While the implants are not in use anymore, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) suggested that there could be as many as 50,000 women in the UK who have this type of product.

Nigel Mercer, consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS president, commented: "This comprehensive study concludes this situation is clearly not the fault of the surgeon, who acted in good faith - it would be similar to blaming a dealership for a faulty car.

"There was no way of knowing the gel was untested or that the protective envelope, which adds strength and restricts the gel from travelling into the body, had been dispensed with."

The study from SOFCPRE found that the company that made the implants stopped using a protective barrier and had begun using a gel which was not the same as the product which passed initial legal tests.
