1% of IVF pregnancies terminated, figures show

IVF treatment

Figures released by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) have suggested that around one per cent of IVF pregnancies are terminated.

While the group does not provide legal records of the reasons behind the abortions, it is thought that medical reasons are the most prevalent.

Threats to the health of the mother or child and 'selective reduction' abortions were among those to be included in the statistics.

The HFEA stated that the number of terminations triggered by social or psychological problems is "very few compared to the total".

A statement on the group's website said: "IVF is not a procedure that is undertaken lightly and we know what it means personally to the many women who make this decision every year.

"All patients who undergo IVF are assessed, as are the implications for any child that might be born, in advance of the decision to treat."
