Breast cancer treatment innovation unveiled

Breast cancer - breast examination

Breast cancer treatment has been boosted by the discovery of a technique encompassing the latest innovation in biopsy procedures.

Scientists at the Roberts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario and London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario, Canada have come up with the pioneering tool.

It is equipped with a mechanical arm that will guide the needle performing the biopsy as well as being fitted with a breking system designed to improve accuracy.

Dr Aaron Fenster, lead author of the study, commented: "Our results showed that biopsy success rates were greater when using our new guidance system."

"We also showed that experienced and inexperienced radiologists performed a biopsy significantly faster when using our needle guidance system."

He added that the process of performing a biopsy needed to be made more efficient and the performance of the procedure also had to be standardised among clinicians.

Researchers at St Michael's Hospital in Toronto have found that woman in Ontario may live longer than men but will experience disability and ill health, which is more likely if they are less-educated.
