Bupa paid 80.8 per cent of critical illness claims last year.

9 per cent of claims were declined due to non-disclosure and 10.6 per cent were declined because they failed to meet the policy definition.

On average, pay outs were £96,000 and claims were made after 31 months. Cancer accounted for 50 per cent of male claims and 73 per cent of female claims.

Bupa has also cut its rates for critical illness without total permanent disability.
