Women urged to boost their self-esteem

Women should take steps to boost their self-esteem before resorting to cosmetic surgery, a psychologist has claimed.

According to Ingrid Collins, a consultant psychologist at the London Medical Centre, women are hugely influenced by media images and many seek cosmetic surgery because of misconceptions about the way they see themselves, regardless of how they actually look.

"We look at the airbrushed images of supermodels and we see that as the norm," Ms Collins explained.

The expert said that patients should be encouraged to address their self-esteem and become happy with their own body.

"Their wish to opt for surgery is not necessarily a lot to do with being too big, too small, too thin or too fat, but a lot more to do with how they see themselves.

"That is what needs to be focused upon first," she claimed.

Apart from counselling, patients are also advised to try other methods such as hypnotherapy or herbal treatments before opting for cosmetic surgery.
