Advice on how to choose a cosmetic surgeon

Female surgeon

Consumers are becoming more aware of the need to select a reputable cosmetic surgeon, the Royal College of Surgeons of England has noted.

Spokesman Ciaran Healy pointed out that cosmetic surgeons in the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) have to be adequately trained before they can become members.

"The next thing would be to take advice from a general practitioner, if one is seeking a cosmetic surgery procedure. They will tend to know a reliable, safe route to take," he advised.

Mr Healy said that word-of-mouth recommendations can also be a useful way of finding a good surgeon.

"Also, it's reasonable to question [your surgeon]: 'Are you a registered practitioner of plastic surgery?'," he added.

The spokesman also revealed that all candidates who wish to become plastic surgeons are selected "by a combination of experienced surgeons and various government agencies", after which they need to demonstrate both academic success and commitment to complete their training successfully.
