Chelsfield Park Hospital's Bariatric Team

The South East Weight Loss Surgical Centre, located at BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital,  today announced that it has been accredited a Bariatric (weight loss) Surgery Centre of Excellence by the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). The accreditation is an official European recognition for hospitals that have achieved excellent results, including significant weight loss and low complication rates, in the field of bariatric surgery.

The accreditation recognises the hard work of the hospital’s Consultant Bariatric Surgeon Mr Shamsi El-Hasani and dedicated bariatric team in delivering sustained, long term results for its patients. The IFSO brings together surgeons and allied health professionals, such as nurse practitioners, dieticians, nutritionists, psychologists and anaesthetists, involved in the treatment of patients with morbid obesity. The main goal of the IFSO is to optimise the results of the treatment of patients with obesity. To be accredited as a bariatric surgery centre of excellence by the IFSO BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital had to demonstrate that:

  • Surgeons have a commitment to post-operative life-time follow up with their patients
  • The hospital performs at least 50 cases per year including open and laparoscopic revision operations
  • Staff are involved in the training of their colleagues in the field of bariatric surgery

BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital also had to demonstrate excellence in its facilities and infrastructure and show that each patient is provided with:

  • Specialised nursing care, including dietary instruction and counselling
  • Psychological assessment (if and when needed)
  • Anaesthetists with a high level of experience in dealing with bariatric patients
  • Experienced interventional radiologists
  • On site critical care
  • Blood tests available 24hrs a day
  • Supervised weight loss support group meetings
  • At least five years’ experience in treating bariatric patients

Speaking on the accreditation, Executive Director Ruth Hoadley commented, “Meeting the IFSO accreditation criteria demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards in bariatric patient care. At BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital we believe that all our patients deserve access to the highest standards of care backed by the highest standards of medical expertise. Many obese patients can feel isolated or anxious but our team aim to support them at every stage of their journey to ensure their decision to undergo surgery has a positive impact on their health, confidence and outward appearance. BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital could not have gained this accreditation without the hard work and dedication of Mr El-Hasani and the specialist team, and on behalf of everyone at the hospital I would like to thank each and everyone one of them for their hard work.”
