Stay healthy, retirees advised

In My Prime

Retirees and those approaching the end of their working lives have been urged to keep their mental and physical health in check by keeping a watchful eye on their lifestyles to reduce the risk of illness.

Dianne Bown-Wilson, chief executive of advisory group In My Prime, explained that relatively minor changes to the way middle-aged and older people live their lives can produce significant benefits.

"As it's never too late to do more to look after your health, introducing small changes to diet and exercise can have a big effect," she commented. "Don't use older people as a benchmark."

Ms Bown-Wilson suggested taking regular exercise, cutting down on alcohol intake and eating a balanced diet, pointing out that it can be easy to fall into a trap of physical and mental inactivity upon retirement.

Last month, a study from the University of Missouri indicated that thorough planning for life after work can reap financial and personal rewards, leading to a better lifestyle and improved health.
