An expert has reminded Brits approaching old age that living healthily can help to reduce the risk of developing dementia, as well as avoiding other conditions such as diabetes.
Professor June Andrews of the University of Sterling's Dementia Services Development Centre explained that recent studies had pointed to certain steps which can be taken to reduce the likelihood of age-related degeneration.
"The evidence is increasing that even if you have Alzheimer's disease, there are lifestyle changes you can make to keep yourself well," she said. "Exercise is very important."
In addition to physical activity, Professor Andrews recommended mental stimulation and added that maintaining an active social life can keep reflexes sharp. She also advised eating a balanced diet and monitoring circulation of the blood.
Last week, a study from the University of California indicated that treatment of chronic medical conditions and changes to lifestyle could prevent more than half of all Alzheimer's cases.
