An expert has advised older people to maintain a healthy diet and keep a close eye on their lifestyles in order to reduce the risk of developing dementia, after researchers in Scotland announced a new probe into the condition.
Alzheimer's Society media manager Hannah Clack explained that regular medical check-ups, exercise and physical activity can all play a key role in maintaining mental sharpness well into advanced age.
"We know that diet can reduce the risk of developing dementia by a third, whereas obesity can more than double your risk," she commented. "It is important to combine diet with regular exercise."
Ms Clack suggested adopting a Mediterranean-style diet high in antioxidants and added that avoiding smoking can also help to reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's and other illnesses.
Her remarks came after a team of scientists from the University of Dundee announced they were conducting a study into how best to harness the human body's antioxidant capabilities to fight cell damage.
