What the public thinks of healthcare reform

Benenden Healthcare

Research into the public’s view of the new government’s vision for healthcare has been done for Benenden Healthcare Society. ComRes interviewed 1000 adults by telephone in June.

More than two thirds of those questioned back the move to give every patient the option to choose their own healthcare provider, including using independent and voluntary suppliers – so long as it meets NHS standards and remains free at the point of entry. What is clear from the research is a strong public appetite for more choice.

The research concluded that:

  • Patients are less patient. They expect more choice, more information, more control

  • There is strong support for freedom to choose provider, to choose their GP, and to have access to more data

  • The public is open to the idea of healthcare professionals having a greater involvement in the direct running of services
