Miracle baby boy is named after mother’s weight loss doctors

Healthier Weight

Following five previous miscarriages and two still births, Liz Sookarry considers the birth of her son, William David Stuart, in April this year as something of a miracle. A miracle that she attributes directly to the specialists at Healthier Weight, the UK's most comprehensive obesity surgery provider. The support in particular that Dr David Ashton, Medical Director at Healthier Weight and Stuart Ingram, the clinic’s Health Educator, provided enabled Liz to give birth to a 7lb baby boy that she is proud to have named after the two people who made it possible.

Liz, 34, suffers from a rare blood disorder called Antiphospholipid which causes a lack of blood-flow through the umbilical cord. Obstetricians had told her that due to the disorder coupled with her being seriously overweight she may never have a baby. Her only hope of carrying a baby full term was to take blood thinning medication, but in order to do that Liz first had to lose no less than twelve stone in weight!

“After losing seven babies my husband and I despaired and had almost resigned ourselves to adoption” said Liz. “I weighed 24 stone and in order to lose the required weight I knew I needed specialist help to be able to realise my dream of having a baby.”

Liz contacted Dr David Ashton,a recognised authority on obesity and its treatment, whose company Healthier Weight provides weight loss surgery procedures to help people lose weight. Dr Ashton recommended Liz for gastric bypass surgery which she underwent in September 2008. The weight loss surgery coupled with advice and guidance from Stuart enabled Liz to lose 12 stone in weight. On 8 August 2009, less than a year after the surgery, Liz discovered she was pregnant again. Liz was delighted and was convinced that this time it was going to work.

“Following my surgery I promised Dr Ashton and Stuart that if I ever had a baby boy I would name it after them” said Liz, “the birth of my amazing son would not have been possible without the help, support and guidance that Healthier Weight offered me,  William David Stuart Sookarry is the love of my life”.

Dr David Ashton, one of the UK’s leading authorities on treating obesity, commented “I am delighted that due to her gastric bypass Liz has been able to successfully give birth to a son!  Stuart and I are overwhelmed and honoured to learn that the baby boy has been named after us both, it is very rewarding to realise that the team at Healthier Weight have been able to help Liz realise her dream of finally becoming a mother”.
