Lung cancer treatment staging system re-classified

doctors consult over x-ray lung cancer

Lung cancer treatment could be improved as a result of new research, which has developed a new method to calculate the prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The International Staging Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) has come up with a staging system based on a comprehensive database and statistical data.

New classification will coming into effect from November 2009 and will provide a more accurate assessment of a patient so the most appropriate treatment can be administered.

Dr Frank Detterbeck, chief of thoracic surgery at Yale University, associate director of the Yale Cancer Center in New Haven and author of the study commented: "The new staging classification system also underscores the level of detail and complexity that characterises the management of patients with lung cancer in the current era."

"The explosion of knowledge and the complexity of the disease make it harder to practice anything less than a sophisticated approach to lung cancer management."
